Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS) presents the sequel to Berita Harian 2003, Berita Harian 2 – Utusan Melayu; the surreal, the contemporeal, the cosmoreal. The seminal exhibition which was curated by Khairuddin Hori in 2003 is deemed at present as a ‘point of departure’ for contemporary Malay art – an avant-garde representation of Malay artists who dealt with issues of identity, the intersection of communities and ethnographical stereotypes. Berita Harian 2 – Utusan Melayu; the surreal, the contemporeal, the cosmoreal is also an attempt to initiate a legacy of artistic platforms reflective to the study of ‘Malayness’.

An event-based exhibition taking place from 12 January to 5 February 2010, Berita Harian 2 – Utusan Melayu; the surreal, the contemporeal, the cosmoreal features nine ‘progressive’ contemporary Malay artists of various disciplines selected by curator, Zaki Razak. The exhibition aims to explore alternative means of artistic productions, convey enquiries in regards to anthropology of ‘Melayu’ and project issues that are deemed as taboos by the ‘Malay’ society.

Artworks featured in the exhibition include:

  • Durational Performance by Agitatsiya
  • Series of Paintings by ClogTwo.
  • Identity and Catalogue of exhibition by Djohan Djohari

Clogtwo and ZincNite Crew were invited by Nazir to collaborate our artworks for this year Siloso Beach Party 2010.
It was on short notice, so we had to rush the ideology and execute the designs on the 26 and 27 December before the year end party starts. And on the eve of new year, all the artists will be doing live collaborative artworks on 12 ft by 8 ft planks. Phadz, our ZincNite crew official photographer was there too, to document and give us an extra helping hand on the huge project.

Arrival at the warehouse. Final discussion before planting the paints on the planks.

Clogtwo's sketch for the day, radiohead.

Basic structure on plank.

Graffiti art is somehow similar to the element of pencil sketching, you create the basic structure and shapes from light coloured spray cans and slowly build up on the details.

After you are satisfied with your sketch, you can use a darker colour to determine the lights and shadows. And to give your illustrations more dimension, you can use various types of lines, ranging from thick to thin and also sharp stroke lines.

That's it for day 1 (26 December), Nazir did his interpretation of LV's monogram for clogtwo's wallpaper. It's time to head home.

Day 2 (27 December) - Back to finalizing the lines of Radiohead.

Soon as you have completed the outline of you illustration, you can now proceed on colouring it. Always remember to work from the mid-tones, than the shadows and finally render the highlights. This systematic process will give you a better flow of getting the 3 dimensional style you are going for. But always remember to be patient and take your time on touching up those drips, for awesome quality.

And finally, the finish product is done.

6 planks from ZincNite Crew X Nazir will be planted all over Siloso Beach, Sentosa. So catch a glimpse of it up close. Or you can catch us doing our live demo on New Year's Eve.

ZOMBIELAND

When there's nothing else to burn, you set yourself on fire.
Clogtwo's first solo graffiti mural at the Somerset Skatepark, Singapore. Three days in the making under the hot sun and rain, the ultimate weather combo, and finally, it's completed. Five decomposing humans and a graffiti piece. Click here for a full production upsize.

Some zombies doing a group photo.
Spent the first day focusing on the facial details and sketch lines to accomplish a comic style.

This one is just a loner.
The 3rd day zombie. Last one to be completed.

Process Stage.
Day 01: Working from 1500hrs to 1900hrs.

Day 02: Clogtwo working on his piece.

Day 03: Working on the last zombie. Timed it for 30 minutes as it was already 1800hrs and it was getting dark.

Night time soon consumed us. All the zombies had a little surprise from a female companion. Angelina Jolie look alike.

WEAREZNC

ZincNite Crew is back on the Somerset Skatepark wall, featuring S13, Slacsatu, Clogtwo, SwazeOne (Australia), Sen, Sandman and Asno. It's been awhile since we did a full production and catching with old friends. This time, ZincNite Crew is bringing you a production entitled ASTRO. A graffiti mural that fuses with the awesome 3D animated movie, Astro Boy.
All photos are credited to Phadz (ZincNite Crew Photographer). He has done a great job documenting us during the whole process. Thanks man.

Full Mural. (larger version).

The day started off, well pretty much wet. It was raining t-rex and triceratops. We had to camp out and wait for the dinosaurs to cool down. So the boys had a nice sharing experience with Ian (SwazeOne) about his trip around the world in 8 months. He shared some pictures he took from Los Angeles, Japan, Barcelona, Berlin and France. After hours of chatting and looking through his black book filled with tags from graffiti artists world wide, the rain finally stopped and the great ball of fire was up and shinning again. And so it was time for 6 Singaporean and 1 Australian graffiti artists to give the Somerset Skatepark a face lift.

Clogtwo constructing the Red Core.

Slacsatu working on his futuristic cityscape.

SwazeOne.

S13 moving faster than the shutter speed. Working on his pastel piece.

And we kept on working and working, breaking our backs and cramping on our fingers to complete the mural. It was exhausting, some of us just sat on the wet concrete floor while rendering their pieces while SwazeOne took a nap on the ramp. But no matter how tiring and hungry we are, we strive to achieve the best quality in our production.

The Red Core (Clogtwo)

Sandman having a quick dinner, and Slacsatu accidentally stepped on his hard boiled egg.

Halfway through the production, Clogtwo was interviewed by some school students to find out more about graffiti arts and how the preparation work was done for their school project.

And we're back to the wall again, smelling the oh so sweet aerosol fumes. Slacsatu.

Some of the crowd admiring Sen and Sandman working on their pieces.

SwazeOne working on his Astro Boy.

That's all for now peeps.
Peace Out!

Judging Amy.

On November 21, 2009, a graffiti art competition entitled Your Life, Your Canvas, organized for aspired graffiti artists ages 23 and below, was held outside of National Youth Council to raise awareness about World AIDS Day, which will be celebrated on the 1st of December 2009. Clogtwo was invited alongside with Libre and 3 other party from Health Promotion Board to judge the artworks. I was amused and surprised of how talented these young graffiti artists are. Some of them are first timers using spray paints as a medium and the creative outcome of their pieces are satisfactory.

(Clogtwo + Libre).

(Briefing before the judging starts).

As for the judging criteria, we are to judge on their techniques, style, colour combination, composition, theme relation and relay of message towards AIDS day. Most of their works have negative approach towards AIDS, for example,"Stop AIDS", "Too Late, Regret" and "Don't Pick It Up". Which is very stereotyped and cliche.

(paying attention to details).

So I judged their artworks based on creativity, to observe if they can think out of the stereotyped society. Something that is more positive, something that can gain a certain impact towards the viewers. For example, humanity tends to separate and isolate people who are infected with AIDS, which is one sided, because not all of them got it from sexual intercourse. Unfortunately, some are infected due to birth. Which is sad, and they need our support and love. But above all, there are young hidden talents out there yet to be discovered and honestly speaking, from what I've seen today, the competitors have potential to become great graffiti artists if they are willing to practice and explore new styles.

So here's a few photos of the competitors artworks. You'll be the judge now and tell me who will rise as the champion.
